Lactose intolerance

What is lactose intolerance?

One of the conditions that makes it harder to absorb nutrients is lactose intolerance. An estimated one-third of Italians exhibit symptoms of varying degrees of severity due to their inability to digest lactose. Although counterintuitive, the explanation is pretty clear: unlike all other mammals, humans as a species shouldn’t ordinarily be able to digest lactose at maturity. Simply put, an evolutionary adaptation that gave rise to the capacity to digest lactose is still in progress. The enzyme lactase, which some people “lose” after they reach adulthood, is being discussed. The lactase enzyme allows the body to break down lactose into more digestible galactose and glucose. If this decomposition does not take place, lactose, which is a “heavy” molecule, irritates the intestine, generating the characteristic symptoms of intolerance.
